When do I need a power of attorney translation
Power of attorney is an important legal document that grants powers to obtain certificates for another person, dispose of their bank accounts, submit documents to government agencies and private organizations, make transactions with movable and immovable property on their behalf, make decisions, put signatures.
Often powers of attorney are issued for use abroad. For example, a family member has moved to Europe and gives power of attorney to a relative to sell his or her apartment. Another example: You want to open a branch office of your company in Armenia, but you don't have the opportunity to travel in person. To get out of this situation, you can appoint a representative and authorize him or her to file papers on your behalf. In both cases, a notarized translation from or into a foreign language will be required.
Do I need to put an apostille?
If you are leaving Russia, you will need to undergo the apostilization procedure in order to preserve the legal validity of the document outside the country. It is a separate international stamp recognized by more than 120 countries around the world. You can view a full list of such countries here. If the right country is not on the list, consular legalization – a more time-consuming and lengthy process – will be required.
On the other hand, Russia has special arrangements with some countries to simplify paperwork and make legalization easier. These include almost all the republics of the former Soviet Union, as well as several states in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
What to look out for
- Preserving the structure and layout of the original;
- Spelling of the surname, first name should be checked against official documents, such as passport. When translating from Russian into a foreign language, it is better to find out whether it is necessary to write the patronymic, since it is not indicated in the passport in Latin script;
- Accuracy of translation of organization names, addresses, passport data;
- Correctness of all legally relevant wording - errors may lead to misinterpretation of the document content by the receiving party;
- Translation of all seals, stamps, including Apostille.
Time of completion
The time required to translate a power of attorney is directly related to the size of the document. Usually one working day is all it takes to get the job done. In case of urgent orders, you can get the finished documents within a day, and in case of super urgent - in one or two hours.
